Certified seeds and traceability are the key of successful production

Quality and certified seed is one of the key prerequisites for successful agricultural production, and it is precisely on the quality, traceability and stability of the assortment that Axereal Croatia bases its offer. As Ante Rogić, head of seed sales in Axereal Croatia, points out, the goal is to offer producers seeds that will enable uniform germination, healthy plants and high yields.

"Our goal is to produce quality certified seeds, because only such seeds produce the best plant densities and healthy plants, and that is the right path to high yields," Rogić points out.

Traceability from field to the farmer

Axereal Croatia places special emphasis on production traceability. Every step—from the establishment of the seed multiplication field to delivery to the end producer—is meticulously monitored. This oversight encompasses crop monitoring during the growing season, timely harvesting, storage, processing, packaging, and final seed delivery.

Axereal is particularly well-known on the Croatian market for its seed program and the procurement of malting barley seed. According to Rogić, the Axereal Croatia operates in this segment across more than 90 percent of Croatia's territory.

Standout barley varieties include Laureate and Planet, alongside newer varieties such as Leandra, Amidala, and Comtesse. Rogić notes that these specific varieties have delivered strong results during the current production season, confirming the quality of the selection.

Expansion of wheat portfolio

Alongside its traditionally strong barley program, Axereal Croatia is also expanding its wheat offering. The portfolio includes Basilio, Complice, Providence, and Celebrity, with their distinct agronomic characteristics and intended uses being particularly noteworthy.

"Our goal is to offer farmers varieties that can respond to different production conditions and farm needs," says Ante Rogić.

Among the newer varieties, Ante Rogić highlight variety Complice, a winter wheat that, according to the Axereal, is characterized by good adaptability to different production conditions. The variety has been in portfolio for three years, and the areas under it are continuously increasing. 

According to Rogić, the yields achieved by producers range from 8.5 to 11.5 tons per hectare. He especially emphasizes the stability and uniformity of the variety in different production conditions. The average protein content is around 12 percent, while a higher content can be achieved in more intensive production technology. It is a variety of mid-early vegetation.

Celebrity stands out with its excellent tillering

Celebrity is a wheat with a medium length of vegetation, characterized by a large ear and intensive tillering. During the previous year, the variety was tested in dozens of locations and in different densities.The results showed that Celebrity, thanks to strong tillering, can make up for part of the lack of plants at a lower sowing rate. However, it is recommended to sow to the optimal density of 450 to 500 germinating grains per square meter. The variety has a large grain, with a mass of one thousand grains of approximately 45 to 50 grams. The yield potential in intensive conditions, according to Axereal data, exceeds 10 tons per hectare, while the protein content is around 11.5 to 12 percent.

The offer also includes Ampleur, a new early wheat intended for producers whose priority is achieving a high yield. It is characterized by large grain and high hectoliter mass, and the yield potential also exceeds 10 tons per hectare.

Basilio, Rogić points out, is the earliest wheat variety in Axereal program, while Providence has shown stability in yield and quality throughout the years of production.

New Seeds processing line in Nova Gradiška

One of the most important investments is the new processing line opened last year. It is a high-capacity line that enables high-quality processing of seeds produced on our own land in Nova Gradiška. "The new processing line allows us to ensure that every seed we process has the same fungicide treatment, which is very important for a high-quality start and beginning," emphasizes Rogić. According to him, the goal is to achieve uniform quality of each seed, equal treatment application and the best possible initial conditions after sowing. "Our processing ensures that each seed is of equal quality, equally applied and that each seed when placed in the soil has the same potential for maximum yield at the time of sowing," he adds.

Protein peas also have potential

Protein peas is also in Axereal's program, and they emphasize the positive impact on the soil as one of its important advantages. As a legume, peas enrich the soil with nitrogen, which can have a positive effect on the next crop.

According to Axereal after peas, the yield of wheat or barley can be higher, up to one ton per hectare, depending on production conditions and applied technology.

The Batist variety is an early variety that can be sown from October to February. Production, Rogić points out, requires relatively moderate investments, along with basic fertilization and fungicidal, herbicide and insecticide protection.

An additional incentive for the production of legumes is the possibility of obtaining support through eco-schemes. For the year 2026, according to Axereal, the maximum amount of support for the minimum share of legumes of 20 percent within agricultural areas is 177.10 euros per hectare.

This year's results from Batist contracted areas ranged from 4.5 to 5.5 tons per hectare, and the company continues to contract production in the new season as well.

More than 130 production results

Axereal also see additional confirmation of the results of their assortments in the data collected from the production areas. On its website, the company published the results of wheat and barley yields, where more than 130 individual results were collected and weighed.

The average realized yield was 9,040 kilograms per hectare, with an average hectoliter weight of 80 kilograms per hectoliter and an average protein content of almost 12 percent.

The company's portfolio also includes durum wheat. Rogić points out that breeding has progressed significantly in the last ten to fifteen years, so new varieties of durum can achieve yields very close to those of bread wheat, with appropriate quality. The new Rocaillou variety is characterized by high yield and quality. Of particular note is the protein content, which ranges from 14 to 15.5 percent.

For this variety, Axereal also conducts production contracting, and interested producers can contact the company's sales and technological-commercial team.

Almost two centuries of breeding experience

The wheat portfolio of this company is based on the varieties of breeder Florimond Desprez, a family group founded in 1830. Almost two centuries of experience in breeding and seed breeding represent an important basis for the development of new assortments.

For farmers, this means offering different varieties adapted to different production conditions, from very early to mid-early wheat, through varieties aimed at high and stable yield, to durum wheat and protein peas.

With the continuous expansion of the assortment, investment in seeds processing and control of the production process, emphasis is placed on the fact that the seeds that reach the producer are of uniform quality and ready for the safe start of the new production season.
